A Quiet Moment in the Woods
Original artwork, diptych

A critic wouldn't call this a good drawing. It has no focal point. Its structure is neither formal nor informal. The background carries far more texture than the foreground, so your eye is pulled in, pushed back, drawn across, and left to wander. Lost.

That's precisely the point.

Imagine you're lost in a forest and you come upon this scene. Have you found the way out, or is this just another patch of woods?

The piece is also about something simpler: the hike isn't about the view from the top. Nature is beautiful at any moment, if you stop and pay attention. That's why I drew this diptych in such slow, patient pen detail. It's a reminder to me, and maybe now to you, to find a quiet, unassuming place in the woods. Sit down. Wait. Watch. See what's revealed.

I learned this as a child. My family spent a lot of time in the wilderness, and there was one long trail we often took, racing to reach the beach on the other side. One day I was walking it alone, and I stopped and sat down on the path, as still as I could be.

Slowly, the forest came alive. It had gone quiet as our noisy herd of clomping humans passed through, and now it picked up its conversation again. We had been like loud drunks stumbling into a room full of deep, intelligent discussion: everyone falls silent, waits for the drunks to leave, and then the real conversation resumes. This drawing is what I saw once the conversation started again.
